Plaine Products is excited to host this post about reusable menstrual cup options from a fellow Cincinnati, woman-owned small business, The Keeper. They align perfectly with our mission to get single use plastic out of the bathroom. If you purchase a cup from them use the code PLAINE to take $15 off!
Taking the leap towards going Zero Waste, or adopting a minimalist lifestyle, is an incredible commitment. It also opens our eyes to see all the single- use products that exist. Reusable menstrual products are a great way to help reduce our impact and minimize trash. The Keeper Cup and Moon Cup exist to provide a sustainable, easy to use and truly Zero Waste option for your menstrual cycle. It can be as simple as replacing one disposable item at a time and replacing it with a reusable. With proper care our cups can last for years and years.
Who We Are
The Keeper Inc./Moon Cup Co. is a woman owned eco-conscience business committed to providing a high- quality product. We began in 1987, as the first reusable menstrual cup on the market. We are driven by passion for empowering women, love for this home we call Earth, and an unsquashable belief that the simplest solutions is always the best. For decades, we have been supporting women and supporting the Earth, first with The Keeper, and later with the Moon Cup. It makes us smile to think of all the empowerment we have promoted and all the waste we have prevented.
After a 20 year absence, we wanted to return and share a product we used and loved with other likeminded individuals, this empowering product to the market, and give anyone who menstruates an alternative to use once and throwaway products that not only hurt our environment but allows big business to profit off our bodies month after month, year after year. Our cups are gentle on the body, gentle on the wallet, and gentle on the Earth.
Over 30 years ago we approached the family that created the last menstrual cup to be commercially produced and distributed. We tracked down the founders, and asked about them re-inventing their menstrual cup and bringing it back to the market. Although they did not wish to develop the cups further, they gave us their full blessing to adopt and release what ultimately became The Keeper: the all-natural menstrual cup that will always be the cup that brought this option back for women everywhere. We took the plunge and will always be glad that we did.
Reasons to Try a Reusable Menstrual Cup
- Gentle on the Earth
- Over 250 pounds of waste are thrown away per menstruating person in their lifetime! The average person produces 4.4 pounds of trash per day, which adds up to over 60,000 pounds of trash during the span of time one menstruates!
- By using a menstrual cup, you’ll create less than one pound of trash, even with replacing your cup a few times.
- Gentle on your body
- Does not interfere with the your vaginal PH balance
- Can be cleaned and sanitized before using for the first time and throughout its use.
- Gentle on your finances
- Save hundreds of dollars over disposable options
How a Reusable Menstrual Cup Works
For some women, reusable menstrual cups do come with a bit of a learning curve. Typically, it takes 1-3 menstrual cycles to get a good routine and get used to using the cup. The cup is folded and inserted into the vagina. It sits below the cervix- the same way a tampon would (not as a diaphragm) and collects the menstrual fluid. The cup is kept in place with a combination of a suction that is created when inserted and the vaginal wall muscles.
Our Keeper and Moon Cup hold one full ounce of fluid, the average women lose 3-4 ounces during their entire cycle, so the cup can be emptied a few times per day. When a cup is removed, it is rinsed or wiped and reinserted. Deep cleaning with mild soap or a vinegar solution is also a part of regular menstrual cup care.
THE KEEPER® is made from natural gum rubber (latex) and is best for bodies with a sensitivity to silicone. The MOON CUP® is made from the highest quality medical-grade silicone available for bodies with a sensitivity to latex.
