Nonprofits We Support: Plastic Ocean Project

Plaine Products has a mission to reduce waste in the world and help eliminate single-use plastics. By offering natural products in aluminum bottles we provide an easy alternative to plastic. We also support nonprofit partners that are working towards the same mission. One of the nonprofits we support is the Plastic Ocean Project.

The mission of Plastic Ocean Project (POP) is to educate through field research, implement progressive outreach initiatives, and incubate solutions to address the global plastic pollution problem, working with and for the next generation to create a more sustainable future. POP is bringing together a community of world leaders focused on innovation, collaboration, education, and outreach. They are spearheading and mobilizing focused research and innovative projects to meet the challenge of removing man-made debris from our oceans in support of our next generation while creating new sustainable businesses.

Through their work to reduce and remove plastics from our waters, POP is tackling the marine debris crisis. And it is a crisis. 46,000 pieces of plastic trash float in every square mile of ocean. 5.25 TRILLION pieces of plastic are estimated to be floating on the surface of the Earth’s oceans. With initiatives such as Trees4Trash, Plastic2Fuel, a traveling art exhibit, and Ocean Friendly Establishments, POP is creating a collective community focused on reducing plastic use and finding innovative ways to give value to plastic waste.

POP Initiatives

  • Trees4Trash Through their Trees4Trash program, POP will plant 1 hardwood tree for every 25 lbs. of trash removed from the SE North Carolina coastal environment. Trees4Trash addresses two major environmental issues ocean debris and climate change. As of July 2019, they have removed 6840 lbs of trash for a total of 314 trees!
  • Ocean Friendly Establishments are certified businesses that are committed to cutting back on the use of disposable straws. These establishments commit to only serving plastic straws upon request in an effort to reduce plastic pollution.
  • Plastics 2 Fuel POP and Renewlogy are working together to develop the solution to plastic marine pollution by turning it into fuel. They are currently fundraising to get a portable plastic to fuel converter to island nations including Haiti and Puerto Rico as a means to clean up these islands and provide clean fuel that otherwise has to be imported.
  • Outreach Through Art POP’s traveling art exhibit, “What Goes Around, Comes Around” is an art initiative to bring awareness regarding the problems of one-time-use plastics, why it matters, and what can be done about it.  Contact POP to bring this art exhibit to your community!

On May 20th 2019 POP was aboard the ship OneOcean for the Ocean Plastic Leadership Summit in the Sargasso Sea put on by SoulBuffalo Expeditions. These signatures are of Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, Dow Chemical, World Bank and the American Chemistry Council to resolve the ocean plastic problem. POP’s art was used in the manifesto!

POP recently celebrated the grand opening of its new facilities. Our founder Lindsey was there to celebrate and had the honor to meet Charles Moore,  the researcher who brought the plastics conversation to life. Plaine Products is proud to have the Plastic Ocean Project as a part of our Plaine Promoters program and to have one of our founders, Lindsey McCoy, as a member of their Board of Directors.
