Curly Hair and Zero Waste

We recently asked our intern and curly-haired gal Sydney to share her advice on curly hair and going zero waste. We’ve heard many success stories of using Plaine Products and individuals with curly hair, including Sydney! Because our products do not contain sulfates or silicones they can work really well for curly hair. Read on for more from Sydney.

Struggling with a mound of hair products?

If you’re a curly or wavy hair girl struggling to find ways to reduce the amount of plastic in your styling routine, then this post is for you!  We’re all always on the hunt for the best products for our hair and have accumulated a lot over the years in this search.  I know I have.  Unfortunately, before we can make the full transition to a low or zero waste option, we have to finish up those bottles of unused product.  That sounds counterproductive, right?  Don’t you just want to make that switch now and get rid of all that clutter in your bathroom?  Well, if we did that, we’d not only be creating waste through the bottle itself but also through the amount of product that could have been put to good use in our hair!

Transitioning away from waste can take a while when you’re only washing and styling your hair 1-2 times per week.  If you’re itching to make the switch to a zero-waste option now, you can purchase a small bottle of the zero-waste product you have your eye on and use it every few wash days.  This allows you to finish up those accumulated products while also testing out the new one without committing to a full-sized bottle and abandoning your goal of making the full switch!  This is where my journey has gotten to.

My biggest piece of advice

One of the most important things I have learned in my transition away from wasteful products is that just because a product works great for one person, that does not mean it will work great for you.  Social media advertises so many products, making us think we need to go buy every curly hair product out there when that’s not the case!  If you have found something that works great for you, don’t buy up all the products you think you need.  Chances are, they’re just going to end up being wasted.  Even just minimizing the amount of products we purchase is minimizing waste in itself!

Things are looking up!

I do have some good news.  For those of you who follow the Curly Girl Method out there, once you finish your past products, make the switch to Plaine Products!  Our shampoo, conditioner, hair repair, and beauty oil are all curly girl approved.  The analysis by “Is it CG?” are linked here (shampoo, conditioner, hair repair, and beauty oil), so you can check it out for yourself!  Our products all have very light refreshing scents that leave your hair smelling great and feeling great.  Switching to a zero-waste option would be great for your hair and the environment.

My hair using zero-waste styling products

Using zero-waste, curly girl approved styling products leaves my hair light, shiny, and feeling amazing for days.

My name is Sydney and I’m an intern here at Plaine Products! I’m a senior at UNC Wilmington studying Economics and Sustainability.  Informing others on how to bring sustainable changes to their lives is something I love to do, but also learning about sustainable changes I can make too!  When not in class or working, I enjoy hiking, going to local coffee shops, and going to the beach.
